Year 6 Sustainable Houses
This week it was wonderful to visit the Year 6 students presenting their sustainable houses to the other students. The Year 6 students have been hard at work researching, designing, and creating sustainable communities in Canberra, Mongolia, and Bali. Through a blend of independent research and collaborative teamwork, they tackled real-world problems with innovative, eco-friendly solutions. Each student delved into the unique environmental, social, and economic challenges of their chosen region, bringing their findings to group discussions. Together, they brainstormed ideas for sustainable housing, efficient waste management systems, and renewable energy sources. By combining their individual strengths and working together, they created impressive prototypes and models that reflect their sustainable designs. This project showcased their problem-solving skills and commitment to a greener future. Year 6 should be incredibly proud of their achievements.
International Day of Play
Last Friday (June 14) we had a very successful extended play time which was run collaboratively with the FOOSHC team to celebrate International Day of Play. It was such a wonderful experience to come together and see the children involved in the play that they were constructing. Everyone was having so much fun we are going to try and make this a more regular event.
Protecting Ourselves from Illness Over Winter
The cooler weather is well and truly here. We have already seen an increase in COVID-19 and other seasonal illnesses at school, and across the community. It is important that we keep everyone healthy by taking simple steps to protect one another. As parents and carers one of the simplest ways to do this is to keep your child at home when they are unwell.
If your child has COVID-19 you must let us know by contacting the Front Office.
Your child should only return to school once they are well, and their symptoms have cleared.
You are reminded that vaccination is one of the best ways to keep everyone safe. I encourage everyone who can, to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the seasonal flu. To find out more visit the ACT Health website.
COVID Smart ACT public schools
ACT public schools have a range of strategies in place to keep everyone safe over winter. This includes cleaning of high touch points in schools, as well as strategies to ensure we balance ventilation and thermal comfort in classrooms to help prevent the spread of illness.
You can read more on the ACT Education Directorate website.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind Regards
Laurel

EAL/D Parent Student Workshop
On Tuesday 11 June, Forrest held its first EAL/D Parent Student Workshop, led by Yumi and her children Mayu (2B) and Yusuke (4T).
The workshop was a tremendous success! Inspired by all things Japanese, it gave students the opportunity to gain a glimpse into life in Japan, including its language and the art of origami. We even sampled some delicious Japanese food and tea. Yumi showcased her skills in origami-making and made the workshop fun and interactive. We want to say a big thank you to Yumi for sharing her knowledge with us.
If you’d like to share your culture with our EAL/D students, we’d love to hear from you. Please email Lucy.Nicol@ed.act.edu.au to find out more.
